And in level it display a progress bar, how many star coins you've collected, how many lives you have, and most notable a powerup icon. For th most part all the action takes place on the top screen, and the bottom screen displays either extra information and lets you move between the worlds you've unlocked when in the overmap. Which brings me to the basic play mechanics. You can also use the coins to purchase different background for the bottom screen. The coins can be used to unlock paths to new levels, or mushroom houses where you can get either powerups or lives. But for the completionist there is plenty of material here, besides the extra 2 worlds, there are levels that can only be accessed by secret endings and in each level there are 3 star coins to collect in each level. This sound like a fairly lengthy game, but in fact 2 of the worlds are secret and the game can be beaten in about 50 levels, using no warps. After that Mario has 8 worlds and 80 levels of koopas and goombas to jump past. There's no extravagant story telling at work here, just a short in game cut scene to set the plot. Personally I'm very pleased with what the game has to offer.Īs usual Peach has been captured and it's up to Mario to rescue her, except now it's Bowser Jr. has been pretty mixed it seems, the majority of people seem to love that they finally have a new Mario game after all this time, while others aren't impressed and wish that it had more new content.
